Washington, D.C. – Summer-like heat is surging across the Mid-Atlantic today, with temperatures nearing 90 degrees and creating uncomfortable conditions during the afternoon commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, highs will climb into the mid to upper 80s across Maryland, northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C., with some locations approaching 89°F. While most areas stay dry, a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms will develop this afternoon, mainly along the Allegheny Front and Blue Ridge Mountains.
Cities along the I-95 corridor, including Baltimore, Washington, and Fredericksburg, will see mostly sunny skies and warm conditions, while areas west of I-81, including Winchester and Cumberland, have a better chance of brief, isolated storms. Any storm that develops could bring quick downpours and gusty winds, but widespread impacts are not expected.
Light winds and strong April sunshine will make it feel warmer, especially in urban areas. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat.
The warm pattern continues through midweek, with additional chances for isolated storms in the mountains. More updates may follow if storm coverage increases later today.
