Newport, North Carolina – Beachgoers along the Outer Banks face life-threatening surf conditions today as a high rip current risk combines with warm, dry weather across eastern North Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, temperatures will climb into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees inland this afternoon, with no rainfall expected. Coastal areas will remain slightly cooler, with highs in the 70s, but dangerous ocean conditions will be the primary concern.

A high risk of rip currents is in effect from Oregon Inlet to Cape Lookout, including popular beaches like Nags Head, Hatteras, Rodanthe, and Ocracoke. These currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, even in otherwise calm-looking surf.

Inland cities such as Greenville, New Bern, and Jacksonville will experience the hottest conditions, with temperatures reaching 86 to 87 degrees under mostly sunny skies.

Officials urge swimmers to stay out of the water or remain near lifeguards, avoid swimming alone, and heed all posted warnings. The heat will continue through the afternoon, but the rip current threat remains the most immediate hazard today, with additional advisories possible if conditions persist.
