Richmond, Virginia – Wind gusts building this morning could impact travel within the next few hours as a cold front sweeps across eastern Virginia, bringing brief rain and stronger northwest winds through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a line of showers is moving through between 6 a.m. and early afternoon Sunday, producing light rainfall totals generally between 0.10 and 0.25 inches across Richmond, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Eastern Shore. Behind the front, northwest winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph, with peak gusts approaching 38 to 40 mph, especially near the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coast.
Wind impacts will be most noticeable from 11 a.m. through 6 p.m., with gusts near 33 mph in Richmond, 31 to 38 mph in Virginia Beach, and up to 40 mph across Accomack County. Drivers on major corridors including I-64, I-95, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel should prepare for sudden crosswinds, particularly in higher-profile vehicles.
Localized travel delays are possible during passing showers this morning, though skies will begin clearing by late afternoon. Loose outdoor items may be blown around, and isolated tree limbs could fall where gusts peak.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture, use caution while driving, and remain alert for changing conditions through early evening. Winds will gradually weaken after sunset Sunday, with calmer and drier weather expected overnight.
Additional updates will be issued if wind advisories are expanded or conditions intensify.
