Amarillo, Texas – Strong wind gusts ramping up within hours could make travel difficult and rapidly spread fires across the Texas Panhandle through early evening Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, southwest winds will increase to 15–30 mph with peak gusts reaching 40 to 45 mph between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. At the same time, very dry air will create critical fire weather conditions across much of the region, including Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, and Guymon.

High temperatures will climb into the low to mid-70s across the Panhandle, including 73°F in Amarillo, 76°F in Borger, and 77°F near Beaver. The combination of warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds significantly increases the risk for fast-moving wildfires. Any spark could spread quickly, especially along open grassland areas near U.S. 60, U.S. 83, and Interstate 40.

Drivers, especially in high-profile vehicles, should use caution on east-west routes like I-40 where crosswinds may exceed 40 mph. Loose outdoor items could be blown around, and visibility may briefly drop in localized dust.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure equipment that could spark, and report any signs of smoke immediately to local fire officials. Even small fires can escalate quickly under these conditions.

Winds will begin to ease after sunset Sunday, but elevated fire danger may linger into Monday as dry conditions persist. Additional updates are expected later today as conditions evolve.
