Amarillo, Texas – A tornado threat continues through 11 p.m. Friday across the Texas Panhandle, with areas from Stratford to Canadian at medium risk for tornado formation as storms push in from Colorado.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, environmental conditions in the red-shaded corridor—including Boise City, Gruver, Guymon, and Perryton—are favorable for tornado development, with a 20–30% chance of formation. Thunderstorms entering from the northwest could intensify quickly, prompting urgent warnings.
Residents in Dalhart, Dumas, and Wheeler are urged to stay alert, especially if traveling on US-87 or US-83. Damage to structures and flying debris are possible if tornadoes touch down. The NWS advises all residents in the risk zone to know the nearest safe shelter and be ready to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.
This developing system is reminiscent of June 2021, when similar setup conditions produced late-evening tornadoes across the region. Stay weather-aware and keep cell alerts enabled.
Warnings remain possible through 11 p.m., and additional advisories may be issued as storms evolve across the High Plains.
