West Union, Iowa – A high-speed motorcycle chase reaching more than 100 mph ended in arrest Tuesday evening after a Fayette County deputy pursued a fleeing driver for roughly 17 miles across northeast Iowa.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 6:29 p.m. along Lincoln Road near the S Industrial Parkway intersection in West Union, where a deputy attempted a traffic stop. The motorcycle instead accelerated, leading law enforcement on a multi-mile pursuit before stopping near the intersection of Maryville Street and Main Street in Calmar.
Authorities identified the driver as 22-year-old Nipun Yonjan of Decorah. He now faces multiple charges, including a felony count for driving more than 25 mph over the speed limit, along with reckless driving, speeding 55 mph in a 35 mph zone, and failure to provide proof of insurance.
The pursuit ended without injuries or crashes, and Yonjan was taken into custody and transported to the Fayette County Jail pending his initial court appearance. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, and West Union Police Department assisted in the response.
Officials have not indicated additional suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing.
