Portage, Wisconsin – Rising water along the Wisconsin River is forcing urgent preparations in Columbia County, where levels are expected to surge from 16.85 feet to 20.4 feet by Thursday, threatening low-lying neighborhoods and key roadways.
According to Columbia County Emergency Management, the river is forecast to reach major flood stage at the Portage gauge, putting areas like Blackhawk Park and nearby riverfront properties at immediate risk of flooding. Residents in vulnerable zones are being urged to prepare for possible relocation as water levels climb over the next 48 hours.
Sandbags are now available at the Columbia County Highway Shop on West Old Highway 16 in Wyocena, where residents must bring their own shovel and transport. A limited number of sump pumps are also available through emergency management for those facing water intrusion.
Officials warn that road closures are likely as river rises, especially in flood-prone stretches across the county. Drivers are urged to avoid any water-covered roads, as just six inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away.
The situation will continue to evolve through Thursday, with additional updates and possible closures expected as the river approaches peak levels.
