Lake County, IL – Thanksgiving leftovers are a cherished tradition, but improper storage can lead to foodborne illness, according to the Lake County Health Department. Officials are reminding residents to follow safety guidelines to enjoy leftovers safely.

The department recommends refrigerating leftovers within two hours of cooking to prevent bacterial growth. Reheating food to at least 165°F before eating is essential to kill any bacteria. Additionally, leftovers should be consumed or discarded within four days.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, improperly stored food can cause illnesses like salmonella or listeria. The agency emphasizes using airtight containers and refrigerating food promptly to ensure safety.

For longer storage, freezing is a safe alternative. Frozen leftovers can last up to six months while maintaining quality. Labeling containers with dates is also recommended for easy tracking.
