Charleston, West Virginia – Temperatures will plunge below freezing overnight, creating an immediate risk to crops and potentially slick conditions for the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory are in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday across much of the state. Lowland areas, including Charleston, Huntington, and Beckley, will drop into the upper 20s to low 30s, while higher elevations could fall deeper into the 20s by sunrise.

A passing disturbance tonight may bring light rain to the lowlands and snow showers across the higher terrain before temperatures fall below freezing. Any leftover moisture could refreeze on bridges and untreated roads, especially along I-64, I-77, and I-79 before 9 a.m. Monday.

The cold snap poses a direct threat to sensitive vegetation and unprotected outdoor plumbing. Farmers and gardeners should cover plants or bring them indoors. Residents are urged to protect pipes and disconnect hoses.

Conditions remain cool Monday with highs only reaching the upper 40s to mid-50s. Another round of frost and freezing temperatures is possible Monday night into early Tuesday before a gradual warming trend begins midweek. Additional alerts may be issued if freeze conditions expand.
