Boston, Massachusetts – Widespread rain and possible thunderstorms will impact travel across eastern Massachusetts through this evening, with wet roads and reduced visibility likely during peak commute hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, rain will continue through much of Sunday with precipitation chances reaching 80 to 90 percent across Boston, Worcester, Providence, and surrounding areas. Embedded thunderstorms are possible this afternoon, which could bring brief heavier downpours and localized street flooding before conditions improve tonight.

Major roadways including I-90, I-93, and Route 1 may see slower traffic due to ponding water and reduced visibility, especially between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Rainfall intensity may briefly overwhelm drainage systems in urban areas like Boston, Cambridge, and Lowell.

Winds will shift to the northwest behind a passing cold front later tonight, with gusts increasing and helping dry conditions into early Monday. However, roads may remain slick into the overnight hours.

A second round of scattered light showers is expected Monday afternoon, though impacts should be less severe than Sunday’s system. Travelers should allow extra time, use headlights in heavy rain, and avoid flooded roadways.

Conditions improve late Monday with drier weather returning, but additional updates will be issued if thunderstorms become stronger or more widespread.
