South Bend, Indiana – Temperatures will fall into the mid-20s within hours tonight, creating a hard freeze that could damage vegetation and produce slick spots on early Monday roads.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from midnight through 11 a.m. Monday across northern Indiana, northwest Ohio, and southern Michigan. Overnight lows are expected to drop as low as 25 degrees, with most areas ranging from 25 to 32 degrees by sunrise.
Cities including South Bend, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Goshen, and La Porte will see widespread frost and freezing conditions. While only a 20 percent chance of scattered showers exists Sunday afternoon, any residual moisture could freeze overnight, especially on bridges and overpasses along I-80/90, I-69, and I-94.
The cold snap poses a direct risk to agriculture and home infrastructure. Sensitive plants may be killed if left uncovered, and unprotected outdoor plumbing could freeze. Winds will be light overnight, allowing temperatures to drop quickly after sunset.
Drivers should use caution during the Monday morning commute, particularly before 9 a.m. when road temperatures remain below freezing. Reduce speed and watch for black ice in shaded areas.
Conditions improve gradually Monday afternoon as highs reach near 50 degrees, but another cold morning is possible before a broader warming trend develops midweek. Additional alerts may be issued if freezing conditions persist.
