Springfield, Ill. – Strong to severe thunderstorms may sweep across central Illinois Tuesday evening, with gusty winds and small hail expected to impact areas from Galesburg to Springfield between 7 p.m. and midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms developing west of the Illinois River have the highest potential for severe conditions, wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, and hail may form at less than quarter size. The greatest risk zone includes cities like Macomb, Beardstown, and Jacksonville, though storms may weaken as they approach the I-55 corridor near Peoria and Bloomington.

Residents in Peoria, Lincoln, and surrounding areas should remain weather-aware, especially if planning outdoor activities. Storms may arrive quickly, with limited warning. Officials urge people to monitor alerts and be ready to take shelter indoors.

While the storms are not expected to be widespread or long-lasting, strong cells could still pose hazards during the evening commute and early overnight hours. More updates are expected Tuesday morning as the system develops.
