Morehead City, N.C. – A weak tropical low forming off the Southeast coast could begin impacting eastern North Carolina by Friday, with rain and gusty winds possible from Wilmington to the Outer Banks.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, an area of low pressure is forecast to develop offshore midweek, with a 10% chance of gaining sub-tropical or tropical characteristics as it drifts northeast. While development remains unlikely, the system is expected to move parallel to the coast, bringing unsettled conditions late in the week.

The National Hurricane Center notes the disturbance could produce breezy conditions, increased surf, and scattered showers along the Crystal Coast, especially Friday into Saturday. No tropical warnings have been issued, but forecasters advise residents and boaters to stay updated, especially ahead of the weekend.

If the system strengthens closer to shore, localized flooding in low-lying coastal zones could become a concern. Mariners should monitor conditions closely as wave heights could increase, particularly near Cape Lookout and Cape Hatteras.

Tropical development remains limited, but this marks the first organized system of the Atlantic hurricane season. More updates are expected if the low shows signs of strengthening by midweek.
