Springfield, Illinois – Cold air funnel clouds were reported over central Illinois Wednesday afternoon, with one sighted near Delavan around 1:30 p.m. While these formations are rarely dangerous, residents north of I-70 should remain alert through the early evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, conditions are favorable for the development of cold air funnels—typically forming in vertically developed clouds without thunder or lightning. These funnels are most common in late spring and early summer and are generally short-lived.

Communities including Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, and Springfield are within the watch area. Although tornado warnings are not issued for these types of clouds, occasional brief touchdowns can’t be ruled out. Drivers and those outdoors should keep an eye on the sky and seek shelter if any funnels appear to descend.

This weather pattern is not expected to bring severe storms or damaging winds, but visibility and brief wind shifts could impact travel in open areas.

Funnel cloud potential will diminish by sunset, though additional spotter reports could prompt updates. Residents should monitor local alerts in case conditions escalate.
