Des Moines, Iowa – Brief funnel clouds could spin into view along the Iowa-Minnesota border this afternoon, as cool, unstable air fuels isolated showers across the region.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Des Moines, Sioux Falls, and the Twin Cities, conditions are favorable for cold air funnels through 8 p.m. Wednesday. These narrow, rope-like funnels typically remain weak and rarely touch down, but may briefly form beneath towering cumulus clouds during periods of localized rain.

The primary area of concern includes northern and central Iowa counties—such as Emmet, Cerro Gordo, and Franklin—as well as southern Minnesota counties from Jackson to Freeborn. Spotters have also been advised to watch parts of southwest Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

While these funnels are not considered dangerous under normal conditions, residents in cities like Mason City, Algona, and Worthington are urged to stay alert. If a funnel cloud appears to lower significantly or a tornado warning is issued, take shelter in a sturdy building.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid distraction during any sudden weather changes, and to report funnel sightings to the nearest NWS office. No official warnings are in effect yet, but additional advisories may be issued through the evening.
