Springfield, IL – Hazardous weather conditions are expected across central Illinois today, Tuesday, May 12, as strong winds, blowing dust, and a chance for late-day storms create a multi-threat forecast for the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a blowing dust advisory is in effect from noon through 7 p.m., impacting areas including Sangamon, Peoria, McLean, Champaign, and Macon counties. Southwest winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, are expected to lift loose topsoil, especially in rural areas with active fieldwork.
These conditions may lead to sudden drops in visibility, particularly along major highways such as I-55, I-72, and I-74, posing risks for drivers during the afternoon and evening commute.
In addition to the dust threat, a cold front moving through the region could trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms late Tuesday afternoon into the evening. Some storms could become strong to severe, with gusty winds and hail as the primary hazards.
By Wednesday, May 13, breezy and cooler conditions will settle in, with highs dropping into the mid-60s to mid-70s before a gradual warmup later in the week.
Officials urge drivers to avoid dust plumes when possible. If visibility suddenly drops, motorists should slow down and pull off the roadway safely. Residents are also encouraged to secure loose outdoor items ahead of strong winds.
With multiple hazards developing throughout the day, staying weather-aware will be critical across central Illinois.
