Houston, Texas – Heavy rain is expected to intensify across Texas and the Lower Mississippi Valley within hours, with multiple rounds of storms raising the risk of flash flooding through Friday night.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, a stalled frontal boundary will focus repeated storms from southeast Texas through Louisiana and into Mississippi. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are likely, with isolated higher amounts that could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and low-lying roads.

The highest risk zone stretches from Houston to New Orleans, including Interstate 10 and surrounding corridors where water can pool fast during heavy downpours. Urban areas face the greatest threat, especially where storm drains clog or rainfall rates exceed 1 inch per hour. Portions of eastern Texas, southern Louisiana, and central Mississippi could see localized road closures if storms track over the same areas.

Drivers should avoid flooded roadways, especially overnight when visibility drops. Even shallow water can stall vehicles or hide washed-out pavement. Residents in flood-prone areas should move to higher ground if warnings are issued and keep phones charged in case of power outages.

The flood threat will continue through late Friday night as storms redevelop along the boundary. Additional alerts are likely if rainfall totals increase or storms stall longer than expected.
