Charleston, West Virginia — A widespread freeze is expected across West Virginia early Sunday, with temperatures dropping to 28 to 32 degrees between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m., creating dangerous conditions for vegetation and slick spots on early morning roads in Charleston, Huntington, Beckley, Morgantown and Parkersburg.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, colder air will settle across both lowlands and mountain areas overnight, allowing temperatures to fall below freezing before sunrise Sunday.

This is part of a broader system bringing much cooler-than-normal conditions across the region, setting up one of the most widespread freeze events of the late spring season.

Frost and ice may form on bridges, overpasses and untreated roads, especially along I-64 and I-77 and in low-lying valleys where cold air pools. Sensitive crops and garden plants are at high risk of damage after several hours below freezing, particularly in rural and sheltered areas.

Drivers should slow on elevated roadways early Sunday, and residents should cover or bring in plants and protect outdoor plumbing from freezing temperatures.

The most critical freeze window will occur between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Sunday, when temperatures remain below freezing across much of West Virginia.
