Grand Junction, Colorado — Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across western Colorado mountains Saturday afternoon, with activity increasing between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and bringing lightning, brief downpours and gusty winds to Grand Junction, Durango, Montrose, Telluride and Silverton.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, storm chances will remain focused over the San Juan Mountains and parts of the central mountains, with only isolated coverage but locally stronger impacts where storms form.
This is part of a broader system bringing gradual warming across the region while allowing enough instability for afternoon storm development, with a stronger system expected next week.
Storms may produce brief heavy rain that quickly creates slick conditions on mountain roads and narrow passes, especially along US-550 near Silverton and Red Mountain Pass, where water can pool on tight curves. Lightning poses a risk to hikers and outdoor recreation, while gusty winds may blow debris onto roadways.
Drivers should slow on wet mountain roads and watch for sudden weather changes, while hikers should move to lower elevations if storms develop.
The most immediate impact window will occur between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., when storms are most likely to intensify over the higher terrain.
