Charleston, WV – Drivers across much of West Virginia could face water-covered roads and rapidly rising creeks through Wednesday afternoon as repeated rounds of rain soak the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Flood Watch remains in effect for much of central and northern West Virginia until 1 p.m. Wednesday. Forecasters expect total rainfall between 0.75 and 2 inches, with locally higher amounts possible in stronger downpours. The heaviest rain is expected to focus from the Kanawha Valley north toward Parkersburg, Clarksburg and Elkins.

Excessive rainfall may lead to flooding along rivers, streams and other low-lying areas. Urban locations with poor drainage, including parts of Charleston, Huntington and Flatwoods, could see water ponding on roads during heavier bursts. In the coalfields near Beckley and Logan, narrow hollows and small creeks may rise quickly if storms repeatedly track over the same areas.

State transportation officials urge drivers not to cross flooded roadways, especially along secondary routes and low-water crossings. Even a small amount of moving water can sweep away a vehicle. Residents should secure outdoor items, clear storm drains if safe to do so, and charge devices in case isolated power outages develop.

The flood threat will gradually ease later Wednesday, but additional advisories are possible if heavier rain bands set up. Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday afternoon.
