Binghamton, New York – Drivers across the Southern Tier could face sudden downpours and wind gusts strong enough to knock down branches by the late afternoon commute today.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening, with damaging wind gusts as the primary threat. Heavy rain and hail are also possible, especially in areas east of Binghamton where the risk level increases. Morning showers may briefly limit instability, but storms are still expected to strengthen later in the day.
Communities along I-81 and Route 17, including Binghamton, Elmira, and Oneonta, could see rapidly changing conditions with visibility dropping below one mile during heavier storms. Localized flooding may develop in poor drainage areas as repeated rounds of rain move through both today and Wednesday.
Another round of storms is expected Wednesday afternoon into the evening, though the severe threat may shift slightly and remain more isolated. Still, any storm could produce gusty winds and brief heavy rainfall.
Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during active storms, and ensure alerts are enabled on mobile devices. Additional watches or warnings may be issued quickly through Wednesday evening as conditions evolve.
