MIDLAND, Texas – Residents across a wide swath of West Texas should prepare for severe thunderstorms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds this afternoon and into the evening hours.
According to the NWS Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued until 9 p.m. CDT for 26 counties. The watch area includes major population centers such as El Paso, Midland, and Odessa, and extends across the Permian Basin and into parts of the Big Bend region. Counties in the watch include Ector, Midland, El Paso, Brewster, Jeff Davis, and Pecos.
The development of strong storms could create hazardous conditions for travel and outdoor activities. Communities within the watch area could experience significant hail, which can damage vehicles and property, along with powerful wind gusts that may lead to power outages. Those traveling on major highways like Interstate 10 and Interstate 20 should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
Area residents are advised to secure any loose outdoor items, including furniture and decorations. It is also a good time to review storm safety plans and know where to shelter if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued.
The watch means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop. Officials urge everyone in the affected counties to stay informed through local news and weather radio for any potential warnings as the situation evolves.
