Blacksburg, VA – Strong winds and mountain snow will impact western Virginia through early Friday, with gusts reaching over 50 mph in higher elevations.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, sustained winds of 30-40 mph are expected across the region, with the strongest gusts occurring west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The winds will persist through early Friday, potentially causing hazardous travel conditions and scattered power outages.

In addition to the high winds, upslope snow showers will develop in the western mountains Wednesday night and continue through Thursday evening. Snowfall totals of 1-3 inches are possible in the highest elevations, which could lead to slick roadways.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, use caution while driving, and prepare for potential power disruptions. Those traveling through higher elevations should anticipate winter weather conditions and check road conditions before heading out.
