Richmond, Virginia – Drivers along Interstate 95 and Interstate 64 will feel more like late May than early March this afternoon as temperatures surge into the upper 70s and low 80s through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, mild air has spread across central and eastern Virginia, with highs climbing into the upper 70s today across Richmond, Petersburg and Williamsburg. Some locations could touch 80 degrees by Saturday and Sunday, marking the first 80-degree readings of the year for parts of the region.

While much of the area stays dry, a few passing showers are possible north and northeast of Richmond late today, especially toward the Northern Neck and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Communities west of the Chesapeake Bay will run several degrees warmer than coastal sections, where onshore flow may hold temperatures closer to the upper 60s and low 70s.

The warmth will be noticeable along I-95 from Ashland to Petersburg and along I-64 toward Newport News. Increased sun glare during peak afternoon hours may impact drivers heading eastbound. Along I-264 in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, cooler marine air may keep conditions slightly milder but still well above seasonal averages.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated during outdoor activities and monitor changing conditions if showers develop north of the metro area.

Above-normal warmth continues through Sunday evening, with additional updates possible if rain chances increase early next week.
