Burlington, Vermont – Sudden downpours and damaging wind gusts could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across Vermont by early afternoon, with storms intensifying through the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, widespread showers with embedded thunderstorms will develop between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday. The primary threat is isolated damaging wind gusts, along with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning as storms move across the region.
The highest risk zone includes parts of central and southern Vermont, while areas near Burlington, Montpelier, and across the Champlain Valley remain in a lower but still active storm zone. Roads such as I-89 and U.S. Route 7 could see brief heavy rainfall leading to reduced visibility and slick conditions during peak travel hours.
While widespread severe weather is not expected everywhere, any storm could produce quick bursts of wind capable of downing small branches or causing isolated power outages. Outdoor activities may be interrupted with little warning.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, secure loose items, and move indoors when thunder is heard. Storm activity will taper off after 8 p.m., though additional updates may be issued if stronger cells develop.
