Burlington, Vermont – Cleanup and recovery efforts continue across parts of Vermont and northern New York after a round of heavy rain delivered more than 4 inches of rainfall in some locations, making Rutland County and portions of the St. Lawrence Valley the biggest winners from the recent storm system.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the heaviest rainfall totals were concentrated across western St. Lawrence County in New York and portions of Rutland County in Vermont. A rainfall report near Rutland measured 4.05 inches, while several nearby locations recorded between 2.5 and 3.7 inches.

In northern New York, portions of the St. Lawrence Valley received between 3 and 3.5 inches of rain, including localized reports exceeding 3.4 inches. Much of the remainder of Vermont and northern New York picked up between 0.75 and 2 inches, enough to create ponding on roads and rises on area streams.

While widespread river flooding was avoided, the heavy rainfall led to localized drainage issues and rapid rises on smaller waterways. Low-lying roads and poor-drainage areas were especially vulnerable during the heaviest downpours.

Communities around Burlington, Montpelier, St. Johnsbury and the Champlain Valley generally received lighter totals, with many locations reporting less than 1.5 inches.

Forecasters will continue monitoring rivers and streams, though the immediate flooding threat has diminished. Residents near waterways should remain alert for lingering high water and changing conditions following the recent rainfall event.
