Pendleton, Oregon – Residents across the Lower Columbia Basin should take fire precautions immediately as strong winds and critically dry air combine Tuesday to create conditions favorable for rapid wildfire growth.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. Tuesday for the Lower Columbia Basin of both Washington (WA691) and Oregon (OR691). West winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 45 mph, while afternoon relative humidity values could fall as low as 19%.
The combination of gusty winds and dry vegetation means any fire that starts could spread quickly across grasslands and open terrain. Communities throughout the basin, including areas near the Tri-Cities region and portions of northeastern Oregon, face an elevated wildfire risk during the afternoon and evening hours.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could create sparks. Drivers towing trailers should ensure safety chains are secured and not dragging on roadways, a common cause of roadside grass fires during windy conditions.
Travelers should also be prepared for reduced visibility near any fire activity and rapidly changing conditions if a wildfire develops.
The National Weather Service rates the overall weather risk as moderate, 3 out of 5, but stresses that fires may exhibit rapid growth if ignition occurs. Additional fire weather alerts or extensions could be issued if dry and windy conditions persist beyond Tuesday night.
