Vermont greets the morning with bright sun over Lake Champlain, but a sharp chill still grips Burlington. Temperatures climb toward 43 degrees today, and roads remain dry for now. Light south winds keep conditions calm, yet changes are already lining up.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, mostly sunny skies hold through the afternoon before clouds increase tonight. Lows drop to around 24 degrees. That cold base sets the stage for a messy transition late Thursday night into Friday.

By Thursday night, precipitation develops after 1 a.m. Sleet may mix in first, followed by a brief period of freezing rain and then snow toward daybreak. New snow and sleet accumulations are expected to stay under an inch, but even a light glaze can create slick bridges on I-89 and Route 7. Plan for reduced traction during the Friday morning commute.

Snow chances linger early Friday before tapering to mostly cloudy skies and a high near 40 degrees. Rain becomes likely again Friday night as temperatures rise to the mid-30s. Saturday turns breezy with rain likely and highs near 54. Gusts could top 35 mph at times, especially along open stretches near the lake.

Sunday brings quieter March weather with sunshine and highs near 49. Clocks spring ahead at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 8, adding evening daylight as we move deeper into the month.

Early next week trends milder. Highs reach the low 50s Monday and approach the upper 50s by Tuesday, signaling gradual Spring Warmth across northern Vermont.

Five Day Outlook for Burlington, Vermont:

Today: Mostly sunny. High 43.
Thursday: Partly sunny. High 32.
Friday: Chance of morning snow. High 40.
Saturday: Rain likely, breezy. High 54.
Sunday: Mostly sunny. High 49.
