Marquette, MI – A strong cold front sweeping through Upper Michigan today is bringing significant lake effect snow into the weekend, creating hazardous travel conditions. Snowfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected in areas north of M-28, with up to 12 inches likely in Gogebic and Ontonagon counties, especially in the Porcupine Mountains.

According to the National Weather Service, snow belts impacted by north-to-northwest winds will see the highest accumulations, particularly through tonight and into Saturday morning. Drivers are advised to avoid non-essential travel in areas with heavy snowfall and prepare for icy, snow-covered roads. Localized whiteout conditions may occur, making visibility difficult.

Temperatures will remain frigid throughout the weekend, with highs ranging from 21 to 30 degrees and overnight lows plummeting to single digits in some areas. The coldest spots, particularly interior valleys, could see lows of 7 to 18 degrees. Winds gusting up to 20 mph will contribute to bitter wind chills.

Looking ahead, snow is forecast to continue through Sunday, with additional accumulations possible. Monday and Tuesday are expected to remain cold, with scattered snow showers likely. Residents should monitor weather updates and check road conditions before heading out.

Those in the region are encouraged to stay informed via local weather updates and take precautions to ensure safety during the storm. Be sure to stock up on emergency supplies and limit travel during peak snowfall periods.
