Virginia Beach, Va. — Strong northwest winds slam the Hampton Roads commuter shed Saturday, creating difficult travel along Route 13 and coastal connectors from the Eastern Shore tunnels through Virginia Beach and into Chesapeake. The National Weather Service office in Wakefield reports sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts peaking near 55 mph developing by midday Saturday, strongest through the afternoon before easing late evening.

Forecasters say the winds follow a sharp cold frontal passage overnight Friday, bringing rapid clearing but dangerous crosswinds for high-profile vehicles. While snowfall remains minimal, the combination of cold air and strong gusts sharply lowers wind chills and reduces vehicle stability on exposed roadways and bridges.

Impacts focus on major corridors feeding the region. Route 13 becomes hazardous from Cape Charles through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel as gusts funnel across open water. Conditions worsen along I-264 through Norfolk and Virginia Beach, particularly near interchanges serving Oceana and Town Center. I-64 across Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel sees buffeting winds, while secondary routes through Chesapeake, Kempsville and Princess Anne experience sudden gusts that push vehicles across lanes. Along Shore Drive and Atlantic Avenue, blowing sand and debris reduce visibility at times.

Transportation officials urge drivers of trucks, vans and SUVs to reduce speed and maintain extra following distance. Sudden gusts near bridge approaches and open marshland increase rollover risk, especially during peak afternoon travel.

Winds gradually diminish Saturday night as high pressure builds in. Sunday remains blustery early but calmer by afternoon, setting up quieter travel conditions before moderating temperatures early next week.

  • Friday: Mostly sunny, lighter winds. High 40.
  • Friday Night: Chance rain/snow mix early, turning colder. Low 23.
  • Saturday: Sunny, very windy; gusts up to 55 MPH. High 31.
  • Sunday: Sunny and blustery early, improving late. High 29.
  • Monday: Mostly sunny, calmer. High 35.
