Wilmington, NC – Freezing rain is expected to develop across southeastern North Carolina Friday evening, potentially causing hazardous travel conditions along I-95 and nearby areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, warning residents to prepare for ice accumulation up to 0.20 inches in some locations.
According to the NWS, precipitation will increase this afternoon, transitioning into freezing rain by tonight. The highest ice accumulation is predicted west of I-95, creating a significant risk of slippery roads during the Friday evening commute. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel tonight through early Saturday morning.
Rain is expected to taper off by Saturday morning, with clearer skies and highs near 49°F. However, residual ice could linger on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses, particularly in shaded areas. Pedestrians should exercise caution as walkways may also remain icy.
The five-day forecast shows a break in severe weather after Saturday. Sunday will bring mostly sunny skies with highs near 48°F. Monday and Tuesday will see temperatures climb into the low 50s, offering a reprieve from icy conditions. Overnight lows, however, will remain chilly, dipping into the mid-20s.
Residents should monitor updates from the NWS and local emergency services for real-time weather alerts. Be sure to stock up on essential supplies and check on elderly neighbors or those with mobility concerns.
