Danville, Virginia – A Flood Watch is now in effect across much of Southside and eastern Virginia through Monday morning as Tropical Depression Chantal pushes heavy rain into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, 1 to 2 inches of rain are likely, with localized totals exceeding 3 inches. The heaviest rain is expected this afternoon through early Monday, raising the threat of flash flooding in urban and poor-drainage areas.
Communities in the southeastern Piedmont—especially Danville, South Boston, and Reidsville—face a slight risk of excessive rainfall, ranked level 2 out of 4. Officials warn that flash flooding could occur quickly, especially near low-lying roads and creeks. Drivers are urged to avoid any water-covered roads and follow the warning: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”
Flood-prone roadways and underpasses in Pittsylvania, Halifax, and Mecklenburg counties may be impacted by rapidly rising water. Residents should secure outdoor items, clear storm drains, and charge devices in case of power outages.
Rain and flood alerts remain in effect through early Monday. Additional advisories could be issued if rainfall intensifies overnight.
