Tornado Watch: Southern Michigan’s Van Buren County Braces for Severe Storm

Van Buren County, MI – A tornado warning has been issued for southern Van Buren County near Dowagiac, creating a potential for severe weather impacts in the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was detected near Hartford at 7:38 a.m. Tuesday, moving east at 35 mph. The warning is in effect until 8:30 a.m.

The storm follows a similar path to the May 7 tornado that hit Portage, raising concerns for residents in the area. The primary hazards include flying debris, damage to mobile homes, roofs, windows, and vehicles, as well as likely tree damage. The storm is expected to impact Decatur around 7:45 a.m., with Lawton also in its path.

Residents are advised to take cover immediately, moving to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoiding windows. Those outdoors, in mobile homes, or in vehicles should seek substantial shelter and protect themselves from flying debris. Continuous monitoring of local weather updates, radios, and alert apps is strongly recommended to stay informed of any changes in the storm’s path.
