Oswego, IL – A 15-year-old Oswego bicyclist was hospitalized and a Chicago woman was arrested following an early-morning vehicle-versus-bicycle crash Wednesday near Route 31 and West Washington Street.
According to the Oswego Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 12:07 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report that a bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle. Police said the vehicle allegedly left the scene and was last seen traveling northbound on Route 31.
About 20 minutes after the crash, deputies with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office located a vehicle matching witness descriptions in a parking lot off Harbor Drive, police said. Shortly afterward, dispatchers received a call from a woman reporting that she had struck a person riding a bicycle.
Police identified the driver as Jasmine D. Smith, 36, of Chicago.
The preliminary investigation determined Smith was allegedly traveling northbound on Route 31 near West Washington Street when she struck the 15-year-old Oswego resident, according to police.
The teenager was transported to Rush Copley Medical Center before being transferred to Loyola University Medical Center for treatment. Police said the bicyclist’s condition was unknown when the news release was issued.
Smith was arrested on accusations of leaving the scene of an accident, a Class A misdemeanor, and driving while license suspended, also a Class A misdemeanor, according to Oswego police.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and the case will be reviewed to determine whether additional charges are appropriate. Smith is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 6.
The charges are accusations, and Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
