Columbia, SC – A Tornado Watch has been issued for eastern South Carolina as Tropical Storm Debby makes its way northeastward. The watch, will remain in effect until 5:00 PM EDT on Tuesday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Prediction Center warns that the storm’s passage could produce a few tornadoes, particularly in coastal areas where atmospheric instability is higher. The watch area covers regions along and 30 miles either side of a line from 25 miles west of Charleston, SC, to 70 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach, SC.
According to the NWS, supercells may form within this watch area, increasing the potential for tornadoes. Residents are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions. Tornadoes can develop rapidly and pose a significant risk to life and property. It’s crucial for those in the affected areas to have a plan in place and to monitor local weather updates throughout the day.
The tornado watch replaces the previous watch, which expired at 6:55 AM EDT. As the storm continues to move inland, the tornado threat is expected to shift across the region.
