Springfield, Illinois – Drivers along I-55 and I-72 should prepare for rapidly developing thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon that could snarl traffic before the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, multiple rounds of showers and storms are expected across central Illinois, with the main window for stronger storms from midafternoon through the evening. Areas near and south of I-70 face the greatest risk for severe weather, including damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail up to quarter size and an isolated tornado.

Communities including Springfield, Decatur, Jacksonville and Taylorville could see storms intensify after 3 p.m. as a stalled frontal boundary keeps warm, unstable air in place. Storms are expected to track east-northeast at nearly 40 mph, increasing the chance of quick changes in conditions along I-55, I-57 and I-74.

South of I-70, including areas toward Effingham and Vandalia, the tornado threat is slightly higher, though still isolated. Brief spin-ups may develop with little lead time. Flash flooding is also possible in low-lying and poor drainage areas where heavier downpours repeat.

Residents should secure outdoor items, review severe weather safety plans and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings. If a warning is issued, move indoors immediately and avoid travel during active storms. Drivers encountering heavy rain should reduce speed to prevent hydroplaning.

Storm chances continue daily through the end of the week as the stalled boundary lingers. Additional watches or warnings may be issued Wednesday afternoon as storms strengthen.
