Fairmont, Minnesota – Snow will quickly cover roads across Martin County this morning, creating slick travel conditions that could slow drivers on I-90 and Highway 15 through 9 p.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Martin County until 9 p.m. Saturday. Forecasters expect 2 to 3 inches of accumulation, with snowfall rates approaching 1 inch per hour at times from late morning into the afternoon. The heaviest bursts could briefly reduce visibility below one mile.
Roads in Fairmont and surrounding rural areas will become snow-covered during periods of steady snowfall. Bridges and overpasses are likely to ice up first as temperatures hold below freezing. Untreated county roads may turn slippery quickly, especially in open areas where wind can blow snow across lanes.
Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and check 511mn.org before heading out. Even short trips may take longer during heavier snow bands.
Snow will gradually taper this evening, but patchy slick spots could linger after sunset. Additional advisories are possible if snowfall rates intensify during the late-day commute.
