Rapid City, SD – Western South Dakota is bracing for significant snow and hazardous driving conditions this weekend as a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect late Friday night. Snowfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are expected across much of the area, with locally higher amounts possible.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory begins at 11 p.m. Friday and remains in effect until 11 a.m. Sunday. Breezy southeasterly winds of up to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph, will create blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility. Wind chills are expected to drop into the single digits and below zero in some areas Saturday.
Travelers are urged to exercise caution, especially along major roadways such as I-90 and other routes through the Black Hills region, where visibility may drop rapidly. Delays and dangerous conditions are likely. Residents should allow extra time for travel and consider postponing nonessential trips.
Snowfall is expected to begin late Friday, becoming more widespread and moderate by Saturday morning. The heaviest snow will fall over central and northwestern South Dakota, with conditions gradually tapering off by Sunday afternoon.
Looking ahead, temperatures will remain cold, with highs hovering around the low 20s through Monday before clearing skies and calmer weather return next week.
Stay updated by monitoring local weather reports and road conditions, and avoid travel if visibility becomes hazardous. For additional updates, check the National Weather Service’s website or tune into NOAA weather radio.
