Rhode Island – Light rain is already beginning to speckle windshields across the Providence area, and conditions could shift quickly by late afternoon as scattered showers and possible thunderstorms move into the region.
According to the National Weather Service, rain chances climb to 50% through the day, with a risk of thunderstorms developing after mid-afternoon. Rainfall amounts remain light, but brief downpours could reduce visibility along I-95, Route 6, and downtown Providence streets during the evening commute.
Providence and nearby communities will see a mild but unsettled stretch. Highs reach near 71°F today before patchy fog develops later tonight into early Saturday. That fog could limit visibility below a mile in spots, especially along low-lying roads and near waterways. By Saturday, clouds linger with a cooler high near 57°F.
The bigger shift arrives Sunday. Showers become widespread after late morning, with rain chances jumping to 80% and temperatures holding near 58°F. Roads may stay slick through the afternoon and into the evening, with lingering showers continuing into Sunday night.
Plan for slower travel and keep headlights on in reduced visibility. If you’re heading out Sunday, allow extra time and watch for pooling water on roads.
Drier, cooler air settles in early next week. Sunshine returns Monday with highs near 51°F, followed by a colder night dipping near 29°F, raising concerns for early spring frost.
