Goodland, KS – A powerful winter storm is set to impact northwest Kansas starting Saturday, bringing freezing rain, light snow, and icy roads. Travel along Highway 27 and surrounding areas may become hazardous by evening, with conditions worsening into Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing drizzle and dense fog are likely to develop early Saturday, making roads slick and visibility low. As temperatures drop, freezing rain and sleet will turn to snow Saturday night, accompanied by patchy blowing snow and wind chills as low as -10°F. Motorists should exercise extreme caution and delay unnecessary travel if possible.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from noon Saturday through Sunday evening for counties including Sherman, Thomas, and Logan. By late Saturday night, snowfall could increase significantly, creating treacherous conditions on local highways and secondary roads. Winds up to 30 mph are expected to reduce visibility further.
Looking ahead, Sunday will remain bitterly cold, with highs ranging from 15°F to 27°F and additional snow likely. Monday will bring some relief with mostly sunny skies and temperatures near freezing, but cold conditions are expected to persist into midweek.
Residents are encouraged to stock up on essentials, monitor weather updates, and report hazardous conditions to local authorities.
