Ipswich, South Dakota – Snow and gust-driven blowing snow are quickly reducing visibility across north central South Dakota this morning, creating slick highways and hazardous travel through noon Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon CST for Campbell, McPherson and Edmunds counties. Total snowfall between 2 and 4 inches is expected, with locally higher amounts possible before precipitation tapers later this morning. Winds will combine with falling snow to produce brief visibility drops in open areas.
Roads in Ipswich, Eureka and Herreid are becoming snow-covered, particularly along U.S. Highway 12 and Highway 83. Bridges and overpasses are likely to ice up first as temperatures remain below freezing. Rural stretches may see drifting snow push across lanes, creating sudden slick spots.
Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and call 511 for updated road conditions before traveling. Residents heading outside should use caution on sidewalks and stairs, where thin ice may be hidden under fresh snow.
Snow will gradually diminish by late morning, but patchy icy stretches and drifting could linger into early afternoon. Additional advisories may be issued if heavier bands develop before conditions improve.
