Aberdeen, South Dakota – Snow and gust-driven drifting are reducing visibility and coating highways across northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota this morning, creating slick travel conditions through 3 p.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. CST for Brown, Marshall, Roberts, Day, Codington, Grant and Deuel counties in South Dakota, along with Traverse and Big Stone counties in Minnesota. Total snowfall between 2 and 4 inches is expected, with locally higher amounts possible. Patchy blowing snow could briefly cut visibility in open areas.

Roads in Aberdeen, Watertown, Sisseton, Milbank and Ortonville will become snow-covered during steady bursts. U.S. Highway 12, Highway 81 and Interstate 29 may see drifting in exposed stretches, especially in rural areas. Bridges and overpasses are likely to ice over first as temperatures remain below freezing.

Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check 511mn.org or call 511 in South Dakota before traveling. Sidewalks and driveways may also turn icy beneath fresh snow.

Snow will taper later this afternoon, but drifting and slick spots could linger into the evening. Additional updates are possible if heavier bands develop before the advisory expires.
