Redfield, South Dakota – Snow will steadily cover roads across northeast South Dakota this morning, creating slick travel conditions that could impact highways and rural routes through 3 p.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. for Spink, Clark and Hamlin counties. Forecasters expect 2 to 4 inches of accumulation, with locally higher totals possible before snow tapers later this afternoon.
Roads in Redfield, Clark and Hayti will become snow-covered during steady bursts, especially along U.S. Highway 212 and Highway 81. Bridges and overpasses are expected to ice over first as temperatures remain below freezing. Secondary roads and untreated sidewalks may turn slick quickly, increasing the risk of falls and minor accidents.
Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and call 511 for updated road conditions before traveling. Those heading outside should use caution on stairs and driveways where ice may form beneath fresh snow.
Snow will gradually diminish by late afternoon, but patchy icy spots may linger into the evening. Additional advisories could be issued if higher snowfall totals develop in localized bands.
