La Crosse, Wisconsin – A narrow but intense band of snow will move in by 6 a.m., with bursts topping 1 inch per hour that could quickly cover roads across parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. CST for portions of northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota and west central and southwest Wisconsin. Most communities in the band will see 2 to 4 inches of snow, with locally higher totals possible where the heaviest stripe sets up. Forecasters warn a sharp cutoff in totals is expected, meaning small shifts could change who sees the heaviest snow.

Roads in La Crosse, Rochester, Winona, Decorah and Prairie du Chien may become snow-covered rapidly late this morning into early afternoon. Interstate 90, Highway 61 and rural routes could turn slick within minutes during heavier bursts. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first.

Drivers should slow down and check 511ia.org, 511mn.org or 511wi.gov before traveling. Snow tapers later this evening, but slick spots may linger overnight as temperatures stay below freezing. Further updates are likely if the band shifts north or south.
