Peachtree City, GA – Residents across central Georgia are waking up to icy, snow-covered roads Friday morning as a winter storm continues to impact the region. Travel is not advised as freezing rain and sleet create slick conditions along highways, including I-85 and major routes.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday. Overnight precipitation brought snow and ice accumulations across much of the area, with additional freezing rain expected throughout the day. Total snow and sleet accumulations are projected to reach up to two inches in lower elevations, with ice buildup near a tenth of an inch.

Morning commuters are strongly urged to stay off the roads, as icy conditions have already caused numerous accidents. Elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses are particularly hazardous. In mountainous areas, snow accumulations could reach three inches, further complicating travel.

By Saturday morning, the wintry mix is expected to clear, giving way to sunny skies for the weekend. Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday will reach the upper 30s and low 40s, helping to melt some of the ice. However, sub-freezing overnight temperatures could refreeze untreated surfaces.

The NWS advises residents to remain indoors if possible and to monitor local updates for the latest road conditions. If travel is unavoidable, drivers are urged to reduce speeds, leave extra space between vehicles, and carry emergency supplies in their cars.

The weather is expected to stabilize by Monday, with highs nearing the mid-40s under mostly sunny skies.
