Jackson, KY – A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 7 p.m. EST Tuesday for much of eastern Kentucky as strong winds and low humidity increase wildfire risks across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, sustained south winds between 10 to 20 mph are expected, with gusts reaching between 25 and 45 mph. Combined with relative humidity levels as low as 20% and temperatures climbing to 72 degrees, conditions are primed for rapid fire spread.

The warning covers multiple counties, including Fleming, Montgomery, Bath, Rowan, Estill, Powell, Menifee, Rockcastle, Jackson, Pulaski, Laurel, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Knox, Bell, Harlan, Morgan, Wolfe, Magoffin, Lee, Breathitt, Knott, Owsley, Perry, Clay, Leslie, and Letcher. Residents in these areas are urged to exercise extreme caution with open flames and outdoor burning, as any fire that ignites could spread uncontrollably.

The National Weather Service advises residents to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could spark a fire, such as discarding cigarette butts or using equipment that generates sparks. Authorities also encourage securing outdoor objects that may be blown away by strong winds.

This warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday evening, with fire risk expected to diminish as winds decrease and humidity levels recover overnight.
