Springfield, MO – Temperatures will fall into the mid-30s overnight, creating patchy frost that could damage sensitive plants across southern Missouri before sunrise Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, lows will drop to between 35°F and 42°F by early Sunday morning, with the highest frost risk developing in low-lying and sheltered areas between midnight and 8 a.m. Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall quickly overnight.
Communities including Springfield, Branson, Joplin, and Rolla may see localized frost, especially in valleys and rural areas where colder air settles. While major roadways like I-44 and US-65 will remain unaffected, homeowners may notice frost forming on rooftops, lawns, and vehicles early Sunday.
Gardeners and homeowners should cover or bring in sensitive vegetation to prevent damage. Unprotected plants—especially early spring growth—are most vulnerable during the pre-dawn hours when temperatures are lowest.
Conditions improve quickly after sunrise Sunday, with temperatures rebounding into the upper 60s and low 70s by afternoon. A warming trend continues into early next week, with highs climbing into the mid to upper 70s through Wednesday. Rain and storm chances return by Thursday, with a 40% to 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms across the region.
