Matteson, IL – A Cook County man has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash that occurred last year on Interstate 57, according to Illinois State Police.
According to ISP investigators, 40-year-old Gregory D. Miles of Park Forest was taken into custody on Sunday, May 11, 2026, following an extensive investigation into a deadly crash that happened on July 27, 2025.
Authorities say the incident began around 4:06 a.m. on I-57 southbound near Vollmer Road in Matteson. Police report that several individuals had exited a stalled vehicle and were attempting to restart it when one person was sideswiped by a passing vehicle.
Investigators allege that the suspect’s vehicle became disabled after the initial contact, and the driver allegedly fled the scene on foot. Moments later, a second vehicle struck two individuals at the scene. Both victims were transported to a hospital, where one was pronounced dead.
Following the investigation, authorities identified Miles as the alleged driver and obtained a warrant for his arrest. He now faces charges including leaving the scene of a fatal crash and failure to report a fatal crash.
Miles is currently being held at the Cook County Jail pending his first court appearance.
Illinois State Police emphasized that the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
