Goodland, KS – A sharp overnight freeze is putting crops and outdoor plumbing at immediate risk across parts of Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska early Saturday, with temperatures plunging into the low 20s.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. CDT Saturday for northwest and west central Kansas and southwest Nebraska, and until 8 a.m. MDT for eastern Colorado counties including Yuma, Kit Carson, and Cheyenne. Lows between 20 and 22 degrees are expected, cold enough to damage or kill sensitive vegetation already emerging after an early spring warm-up.
Communities including Goodland, Colby, Norton, McCook, Burlington, and Wray are all within the warning area. Agricultural impacts are a major concern, as crops have begun growing 2 to 4 weeks ahead of normal, leaving them especially vulnerable to frost damage.
Residents should cover or bring in tender plants immediately and ensure outdoor pipes are insulated. Farmers and gardeners may face losses if precautions are not taken before sunrise.
Temperatures are expected to rise later Saturday morning, but additional alerts remain possible if cold conditions persist into the weekend.
