Bellaire, MI – Water releases and rising pressure at two Michigan dams could trigger rapid flooding with little warning, putting low-lying communities at risk through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Antrim County through Sunday morning due to high flows from the Bellaire Dam along the Intermediate River. Officials warn that areas downstream in Bellaire could see sudden water rises, especially in poor drainage zones and near the riverbanks.
In western Michigan, the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids reports a separate Flash Flood Watch for Oceana County through Saturday morning tied to the Hesperia Dam on the White River. Increased runoff and incoming rainfall are pushing already high water levels even higher, raising concerns about structural stress at the dam.
Communities near Hart and downstream stretches of the White River face the greatest risk early Saturday, while Bellaire-area concerns continue into Sunday. If either dam weakens, water could move quickly into nearby neighborhoods and roadways.
Residents should stay alert for warnings, avoid river-adjacent roads, and be ready to move to higher ground if conditions change. Emergency officials continue to monitor both dams closely, with updates expected as water levels evolve through the weekend.
